These individual images are a direct response to place. Daily walks and repeated observation inform of subtle seasonal and atmospheric changes, of temporal moods; forgotten by-waters are explored and neglected corners celebrated. Various techniques are employed in order to translate an experience into a visual entity and to explore the interface between the physical and the psychological. “Under fortuitous circumstances, the good humour of enchantment spills over into critical consciousness and tempers it, thus rendering its judgment more generous and its claims less dogmatic. I pursue a life with moments of enchantment rather than an enchanted way of life. Such moments can be cultivated and intensified by artful means. Enchantment, as I use the term, is an uneasy combination of artifice and spontaneity." (Jane Bennett 2001). The artist is part of the research programme at UWE, Bristol; the title of the project being: ‘Between location and dislocation, relocation and translocation: an investigation of place in relation to dwelling and mobility’. Place in this instance refers to location, situation, experience and/or identity and is both rural and plural. Doctoral research is practice-led and although informed by theoretical studies and critical analysis, is primarily founded on a phenomenological account of lived experience. An embodied practice considers emplacement and notions of home in connection with the temporal, with personal and social history, and with memory. An engaged and informed practice examines dwelling and transience and explores mobility alongside and co-existing with a basic human need for roots.
